I'm not sure what's happening with Seth Godin over at his blog, It seems as though more and more of his posts have had a relevance not just to the new marketing community, but to the creative community as well. While there's certainly some overlap between the two, I think some of his latest riffs have been targeted more towards the latter in a big picture, 'what are you doing with your life' kind of way.
I hate to be an echo chamber, but you really should get over there and read his new post called "Maybe You Can't Make Money Doing What You Love". It really gets to the heart of some of the issues I've brought up here on this blog and I think he makes some excellent points. He strikes an great balance between staying put and diving in head first that should be considered by anyone looking to make a living from their creative pursuits.
"Do your art. But don't wreck your art if it doesn't lend itself to paying the bills. That would be a tragedy."
On a side note, and in light of this, I think I'm going to go back and reread his book
The Dip and see how it can be applied to the creative process. I bet there will be more than a few valuable insights there when read from that perspective.
Take the time to read his entire post here.
I figured out a while ago that writing on the topic I care about - internationald evelopment - was never going to be something I could monetize. It made me feel like I had screwed up somehow; havign Seth validate what I already knew was a huge relief.
